William Smith’s Federow and Salmon Garner UCHC Awards

Two members of the William Smith College ice hockey team earned United Collegiate Hockey Conference weekly awards as announced by the conference office today. Senior forward Krista Federow (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Kent) was named the Player of the Week, while senior goalie Maggie Salmon (Medford, Mass./The Governor’s Academy) was tabbed the Goalie of the Week.

The Herons improved to 13-4-3 overall and 9-1-2 in the UCHC after sweeping Manhattanville at The Cooler this past weekend. On Saturday, junior Maura Mulligan scored 3:33 into overtime to give William Smith a 2-1 win. The next day, the Herons scored twice in the third period to edge the Valiants 2-1.

Federow had a hand in three of William Smith’s four goals over the weekend. On Sunday, she scored both of the Herons’ goals as they rallied to defeat the Valiants in the third period. Federow tied the game 1-1 at 5:59 of the third period. She redirected a Rebecca Begley shot from the point into the upper corner of the goal. Federow tallied her league-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. She wristed a shot from the slot off the left post into the back of the net. On Saturday, Federow set up Mulligan’s game-winning power-play goal.

Federow has a career-high 27 points on 10 goals and 17 assists this season. She leads the league in assists and is 10th in the nation, averaging 0.85 assists per game. Federow is fourth in the UCHC in points and is sixth in goals.

Salmon was stellar in goal for William Smith this past weekend. She stopped 80 of the 82 shots she faced, backstopping the Herons to a pair of conference victories. Salmon recorded a season-high 40 saves on both Saturday and Sunday. She finished the weekend with a 0.98 goals against average and a .976 save percentage. Salmon also recorded an assist on Sunday’s game-winning goal, the third of her career.

Salmon has played a majority of the minutes in goal for William Smith during her senior campaign. She is 11-3-3 with three shutouts. Salmon is second in the UCHC and eighth in the nation in save percentage and second in the conference and 16th in the nation in goals against average.

The Herons will be back in action this weekend, Feb. 3-4 when they take on No. 3 Elmira in a home-and-home series. Saturday’s game will take place in Pine Valley, N.Y., and is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., while Sunday’s game at The Cooler is slated to begin at 4 p.m. William Smith and Elmira will enter the weekend tied atop the conference standings.
