William Smith College first-year Julia Mings was named the United Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Rookie of the Week today. This is the second time this season that Mings has won the award.

Mings tallied the game-winning goal in the Herons 3-1 win over Cortland on Saturday. Her power-play goal at 10:24 of the second period was her ninth goal of the season. Through 25 games, Mings is fifth on the team with 18 points (9g,9a). She is tied for second on the team with three power-play goals.

Mings finished the regular season fourth in the UCHC in rookie scoring, averaging 0.72 points per game. She is also tied with teammate Krista Federow for the conference lead with five game-winning goals. With 18 points this season, Mings needs one point to match Federow’s rookie scoring record of 19 (11g, 8a).

For the third straight week and the fourth time this season, William Smith received a vote in the D3hockey.com Women’s Top 10. The Herons completed their regular season with a 16-5-4 overall record and an 11-2-3 mark in conference play. William Smith finished second in the UCHC standings and earned a bye to the semifinals. The Herons are among the nation’s best in scoring offense (8th, 4.12 gpg), scoring defense (10th, 1.44 gpg), penalty kill (12th, 89.5), and power play (13th, 20.2).

William Smith will be back in action March 3, in Pine Valley, N.Y., for its first playoff game as a varsity program. The Herons will take on either Stevenson or the winner of the Utica-Neumann quarterfinal game.
