POTSDAM, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team dropped an ECAC West contest 4-3 to Potsdam this afternoon. The Herons scored three third period goals but could not complete the comeback.
The Bears opened the scoring in the first period. Jordan Ott fired a shot into the back of the net to give Potsdam (2-1-1) a 1-0 lead. Izzy Fayerman was credited with the assist. Roberta Beatty doubled the Bears’ lead at the 16:31 mark of the second period. With the team on a power play, Beatty collected a pass from Ott and drilled a shot into the goal. Amanda Peterson was credited with the secondary assist. With a second remaining in the period, Brenna Wilson put Potsdam up 3-0. Beatty sent a pass to Wilson who tucked the puck in the goal.
At 2:13 of the third period, William Smith first-year Rachel McKay<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5546> notched her first goal of the season collecting a pass from Megan Wilmot<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5554> to cut the lead to 3-1. A little more than four minutes later, Ott recorded her second goal of the game off an assist from Fayerman to extend the Bears lead to 4-1.
The Herons (0-5-1) cut the lead in half when Dori Craig<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5539> scored on the power play. Morgan Bayreuther<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5534> and Rebecca Begley<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5535> set up the play and were credited with assists. Krista Federow<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5542> recorded an unassisted goal with a minute and a half remaining in the period to bring the Herons within one. Federow’s goal was her second of the season, a team-high. William Smith kept the pressure on in the final 90 seconds with Federow providing another scoring opportunity.
Megan Messuri<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5547> started in goal for the Herons and made 50 saves. Abby Tardelli started between the pipes for the Bears and made 35 saves in the winning effort.
Potsdam outshot William Smith 44-38. Each team went 1-3 on the power play.
The Herons return to action Saturday, Nov. 22 when they host Neumann in another ECAC West conference game. Face off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
