BUFFALO, NY, March 10, 2017 – 2016 draft pick Hayley Scamurra has agreed to a contract with the Buffalo Beauts for the remainder of the 2016-17 National Women’s Hockey League season. Scamurra was drafted 10th overall by Buffalo and recently completed her collegiate hockey career with the Northeastern Huskies. This season, she won the Best Defensive Forward Award in Hockey East, selected by the conference’s coaches.
“I am blessed to be able to continue to play hockey in the NWHL after my college career and am honored to turn pro for my hometown team,” said Scamurra. “I look forward to contributing to the Beauts in their playoff run for the Isobel Cup.”
Scamurra hails from Williamsville, N.Y. and attended Nicholas School prior to playing at Northeastern, where she became a top forward in the NCAA. Playing in all 32 games in her senior year, she ranked second on the team in assists with 21, and had a goal in the win over UConn that advanced the Huskies to the Hockey East semifinals. Over her last two seasons at Northeastern, Scamurra was 22-52-74 in 75 games.
“We have kept a close eye on Hayley’s outstanding development over the last few years, and now we are looking forward to adding her to our team,” said Beauts GM and coach Ric Seiling. “She is an explosive forward who excels at every aspect of the game.”
Scamurra will practice with the Beauts tonight. The team’s regular season finale is Sunday at 3:00 pm against the Whale in Northford, CT. The outcome of the game will determine who the team will face in the first round of the Isobel Cup playoffs. Buffalo will either play at Boston or at New York in the semi-final.
The 2016-17 NWHL season concludes on Sunday, March 19, when the Isobel Cup Final is played at 6:00 pm at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.
