wm-vs-cash            The first week of play was short due to the Thanksgiving holiday but it still brought some exciting hockey to local arenas with the opening week of play for the seventh season of WNY Girls Varsity Ice Hockey.

Williamsville opened the season with a 4-1 win over West Seneca/Hamburg and Eden. Eden joined WS/Hamburg this season.

The second game of the season pitted Monsignor Martin, reigning champions, against Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew with MM winning 7-2.

Williamsville took to the ice for the consecutive day beating Amherst/SweetHome/Clarence (CASH) 6-3. Williamsville opened the scoring at 4:06 of the first period with an unassisted goal by Rachel Juneau. Williamsville’s Elizabeth Sidorski scored the second by before the first period ended Amherst/SH/Clarence’s Casey Adimey dropped one in ending the first period 2-1. Both teams scored in the second going into the third period 3-2. Jenna Cavalieri scored for Williamsville and Emma Faso scored for CASH.

In the third period Williamsville added three more, including an empty netter and CASH added one making the final 6-3. For Williamsville it was Holly Schmelzer with a hat trick, including the empty netter and for CASH Julia Mings scored.

Then we made our way to Lincoln for the Kenmore/Grand Island vs Orchard Park/Frontier/LakeShore (OPFLS) game. OPFLS dominated the game scoring all seven goals in the 7-0 shutout. Scoring were Gabby DeMeo, Frangelica Bautz, Jessica Peters, and Mary Kromer . (One more player scored but NYHOL doesn’t have a name). Keeping Kenmore/Grand Island’s pucks from the net was Goalie Victoria Cottrell.

At the close of the week OPFLS and Williamsville lead with two wins in two games.
