WNYGVIH Mid-Season Review

Well I started off the season with a promise to write a weekly follow-up to the Western New York Girls Hockey League games. That lasted for the first two weeks and the holidays and travel set in for the Schultz’s. I have been keeping track of what’s going on via Bill Pavone’s wonderful stats from each game; so here goes a review of the season thus far.

Again, the teams are each fighting for that top spot, and again, no one can really predict who will win the League or the Section Championships. After the last game in December Clarence/Amherst/SweetHome sit in first with a 7-2-1 and 21.5 points. However, Frontier/Lancaster/Orchard Park keep it close with 6-2-1 and 20.5 points in second. Closely behind is Williamsville with a 7-3-0 record and 20 points. The other four teams have played fewer games, some cancelled due to weather, so while their stats don’t sit up there with the first three it could easily be Monsignor Martin (5-1-0 after 6 games) or even some upsets by Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew (1-5-0),  West Seneca/Eden/Hamburg (1-6-0) or Kenmore/Grand Island (0-8-0) that could topple any team at any time.

The games have been fast-paced, skilled and emotional; just as they were when the league began seven years ago.

For those looking for all those wonderful stats; Mark Miller has put together a great list of whose doing what as of December 23. I will share that with you at the end of this story.

Let’s take a look at some great news-worthy items from the past few weeks.

Jenna Woods set a Williamsville Girl’s Hockey Record when she scored 5 goals in a single game on December 1 against West Seneca/Hamburg/Eden.

Clarence/Amherst/SweetHome’s Charleigh Rondeau had a hat trick on December 5 against Kenmore/Grand Island. Cash beating KGI 7-2. She had another hat trick December 18 in a 7-6 overtime victory against the same team.

One of the highest scoring games was the 8-0 victory for Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew over West Seneca/Hamburg/Eden.

In what has developed as an interesting rivalry found CASH beating Williamsville twice this season and those two will faceoff again January 16.

Coach Rick Hopkins headed off to the North with his team after Oswego had to opt out of the Clinton Holiday Tournament. Williamsville beat Canton 4-3 in overtime with an unassisted goal by Kelly Dormer. Rose Quattro took the win guarding the net. In the second game Potsdam defeated Williamsville 4-0 with Jenna Lukomski making 31 saves.

Well it’s not WNY without some winter game cancellations and WNYGVIH has had several. In that light, games have been rescheduled so add these dates to your schedule:

January 10 Kenmore/Grand Island will take on Lancaster/Depew/Iroquois at Riverworks; puck drop at 5:30 p.m.

January 24 Lancaster/Dewpew/Iroquois will take on Kenmore/Grand Island, also at Riverworks at 5:30 p.m.

It’s hard to believe but not long after those games we will be facing the playoffs with Section VI quarterfinals beginning on February 1; followed by the NYSPHSAA Championship in Oswego on February 9 and 10 and then back home to the WNYGVIH quarterfinals beginning on February 13.

The regular season returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 2 as FLOP takes on LID at 4 p.m. at Holiday Twin Rinks and CASH vs Ken/GI at 7:40 p.m. at Lincoln.

Thursday’s (Jan. 4) action includes WSHE vs FLOP at Hamburg Nike Arena at 4:30 p.m. and LID will be meeting Williamsville at 4 p.m. at Northtowns. On Friday its Monsignor Martin at WSHE at West Seneca Rink at 5 p.m.

The Schultz’s are hopefully returning to the games next week after an extended holiday with family in the mid-West.

Have a Prosperous and Healthy New Year!
