Team USA Falls, 5-3, to Canada as Comeback Comes Up Short
Teams will meet in Hartford, Conn. on Dec. 14 for first Rivlary Series game
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The U.S. Women’s National Team scored three third period goals, but fell, 5-3, to Canada in the second and final exhibition between the two teams as part of a joint training camp on Sunday at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. The teams will next meet on December 14 in Hartford, Conn. in the first game of the Rivalry Series.”It was a disappointing weekend,” said head coach Bob Corkum (Salisbury, Mass.). “We looked in disarray a lot of the time and the compete level was not there so we have some work to do.”The Canadians took a 1-0 lead after Emily Clark snuck the puck behind U.S. netminder Kaitlin Burt (Lynn, Mass.) 5:51 into the first period. It was Clark’s first of three goals on the afternoon.Canada doubled the lead a minute later off the stick of Melodie Daoust, Natalie Spooner converted on the power play to extend Canada’s lead to 3-0 at the first intermission.Neither team would score in the second period despite a number of quality opportunities for Team USA. The U.S. outshot Canada, 13-9, in the middle frame including a flurry of chances in the final minute.The U.S. broke through in the opening minutes of the third period after Kendall Coyne-Schofield (Palos Heights, Ill.) redirected Cayla Barnes’ (Eastvale, Calif.) shot from the blue line past Canada goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer to make it a 3-1 game.Clark tallied her second goal of the day at the 8:48 mark of the final stanza to regain Canada’s three-goal lead, but Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.) buried a feed from Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) past Maschmeyer moments later to make it a 4-2 game.Kelly Pannek (Plymouth, Minn.) put away Team USA’s second power-play goal of the day with under 10 minutes to play to pull the U.S. within a goal of the Canadians. Pannek received a pass on the left faceoff dot and fired a shot past Maschmeyer.Clark completed the hat trick minutes later to make it a 5-3 game. After battling for the puck at the blue line, Clark poked it past Burt for the final goal of the contest.NOTES: Team USA will take on Canada on December 14 in Hartford, Conn. in the first game of the Rivalry Series.
