ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Three skaters from the Elmira College women’s ice hockey team were named to the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Preseason Watch List, which features the top players from around the newly-formed league. Third-year forwards Maddie Evangelous ’19 and Katie Granato ’19 were selected, as was senior netminder Kelcey Crawford ’18.
Evangelous, who was named an assistant captain over the summer, will once again look to be a threat on the offensive end of the ice, after leading the Purple and Gold in points a season ago. The product of Hudson, Massachusetts, produced 28 points during her sophomore season on 10 goals and 18 assists, and enters her junior year with 51 career points (23g-28a). She logged nine multi-point games last season, including a quartet of four-point performances, as she paced the nation’s seventh-leading scoring offense.
Granato continued her role as one of EC’s most lethal scoring threats a season ago with a team-high 14 goals, three higher than her freshman year total, and four two-goal performances. The Naperville, Illinois, native also improved from a distribution perspective, as she increased her assist total from her freshman to sophomore season by five (13). Her 27 points in 2016-17 season were second-most on the team, making her one of five Soaring Eagles to accumulate 20-plus points on the year. Additionally, her effect on the outcome of games last year was undeniable, as the Purple and Gold were 10-0-0 in contests in which she scored at least one goal.
Crawford, who will don the captain’s ‘C’ on her chest for the upcoming season, will be looking to cap off a fantastic collegiate career between the pipes in 2017-18. The Purcellville, Virginia, finished fifth in the country in both goals-against average (1.21) and save percentage (.951) a season ago, the latter of which tied EC’s single-season program record. She amassed 389 saves in 17 games and produced a solid 10-4-2 record. Crawford enters her senior year third in EC history in win percentage (.800), goals-against average (1.35) and save percentage (.937), as well as seventh in wins (31), saves (794) and shutouts (12).
The Elmira women open the 2017-18 campaign with a road trip to Central New York, as the Soaring Eagles face former ECAC West Conference rival Oswego State on Saturday, November 4, at 3:00 p.m. Elmira’s home opener is scheduled for Friday, November 17, when EC hosts Stevenson University in UCHC action at the Murray Athletic Center at 7:00 p.m.
