The Yale men’s hockey team scored six unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 win over St. Lawrence on Friday night in New Haven, Connecticut.

Alex Gilmour scored the lone goal of the day for the Scarlet and Brown, while Jacob Pritchard had a team-best four shots. Dante Palecco led the Bulldogs with a hat trick and Joe Snively added two goals.

With the loss the Saints drop to 1-9-1 and 0-2-1 in ECAC Hockey action. Yale improves to 3-2-0 overall and in league play.

Gilmour gave the Saints a 1-0 lead at 13:26 of the first period off a cross-ice feed from Ben Finkelstein with the team’s skating four aside. Gilmour redirected the pass from Finkelstein high over the glove of Yale goaltender Sam Tucker for his fourth of the season.

Yale tied the game just over three minutes later when the Bulldogs won a battle along the end boards and Ted Hart kicked the puck out to Evan Smith in front. Smith put a shot low inside the far post behind Saints’ starting netminder Arthur Brey.

Yale scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the second period to take a 3-1 lead, both by Palecco. Joe Snively made it 4-1 in favor of the Bulldogs with a hard wrister from the left circle that sparked a goaltending change for the Saints, as Daniel Mannella replaced Brey.

In the third period, Palecco notched a hat trick with a power play goal off a rebound at the 6:38 mark. Just seven seconds after Joe Sullivan was sent off for roughing, Palecco and the Bulldogs converted to extend the lead to 5-1.

Midway through the final frame St. Lawrence got a five-minute power play opportunity when Evan Smith was given a major penalty and a game misconduct for contact to the head. However, the Saints struggled to get things going and eventually gave up a two-on-one to Snively and Ryan Hitchcock. Snively bested Mannella with his second of the night to extend the Bulldogs lead to 6-1.

Brey and Mannella combined to make 32 saves for the Saints, including 15 in the third period for Mannella. Yale’s Sam Tucker finished with 19 saves.

St. Lawrence will travel to Brown on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game.
